Abandonment is usually blamed on price. In this market it is more often the checkout itself, and the causes are specific enough to fix one at a time.
Missing local payment methods
Card-only checkout loses transactions that were already decided. Mada in Saudi Arabia is not optional. Cash on delivery still carries a meaningful share of orders across several Gulf markets, and removing it to simplify operations removes revenue with it.
Buy now, pay later has become normal at higher basket values. It costs more per transaction, so it earns its place above a certain order value and not below it.
Delivery cost revealed too late
The single most common abandonment trigger anywhere, and worse here because delivery expectations vary sharply by emirate and region. Show the cost on the product page if you possibly can, and give a delivery window in concrete days rather than "24 to 72 working hours", which reads as an excuse.
Forced account creation
Requiring an account before purchase is a self-inflicted wound. Offer guest checkout and invite the account afterwards, when the customer already has a reason to want order tracking.
A checkout nobody tested in Arabic
Switch your own checkout to Arabic and complete a real order on a phone. Common findings: the total and the currency reversed, form labels sitting on the wrong side of their fields, a phone field that rejects a local format, and error messages still in English. Every one of those costs orders silently, because the customer does not write to tell you.
Trust signals in the wrong place
Return policy, contact details and a real business address matter more here than a security badge. Put them where the decision happens, which is the payment step, not the footer.
How to find your own version of this
Place a real order on your own store, on a phone, on mobile data, in Arabic, paying with a local method, then return it. Most teams discover two or three fixable problems in twenty minutes, and the return flow is where the worst of them hide because it is almost never tested.
Frequently asked questions
What abandonment rate is normal?
High enough everywhere that the number itself is not diagnostic. What matters is the drop between your own steps, because that identifies which one is failing.
Do abandoned-cart emails work?
One does. A sequence of three annoys people who abandoned for a reason you have not fixed. Fix the reason first, then send the reminder.
