Shopify in the UAE: The Complete Guide for Dubai Store Owners

6 min readAVMDEVS

Shopify is now the default answer when a UAE business asks how to sell online, and for good reason. It removes most of the infrastructure problem. What it does not remove is the local problem: dirham settlement, VAT, Arabic, courier coverage across seven emirates, and customers who expect cash on delivery. We build and run Shopify stores for GCC brands, and almost every issue we are called in to fix is one of those five, not a Shopify issue at all.

This guide covers what actually matters when you run Shopify in the UAE in practice, not in theory.

Does Shopify work properly in the UAE?

Yes. Shopify is fully usable from the UAE, supports AED as a store currency, and works with local payment providers. The limitation people run into is Shopify Payments, which is not available in every market the way it is in the US or UK. That means you connect a third party gateway instead, and that choice has real consequences for your settlement times and your checkout conversion.

Practically, a UAE Shopify store needs three things wired correctly before launch: a gateway that settles to a UAE bank account in AED, a VAT setup that produces compliant invoices, and a shipping configuration that matches how couriers actually price zones here.

Payments: the decision that matters most

Your gateway determines how much money reaches you and how quickly. The realistic options for a UAE Shopify store are the regional processors such as Telr, PayTabs, Network International and Checkout.com, alongside international options like Stripe and 2Checkout depending on your entity structure.

What to compare, in the order that actually affects your business:

  • Settlement currency and cycle. AED settlement to a local account, and whether you wait two days or fourteen.
  • Per transaction cost, including the cross border markup that applies to a lot of Gulf card traffic.
  • Whether it supports the local wallets and instalment products your customers expect.
  • Whether it plugs into Shopify as a native gateway or forces an offsite redirect, which costs you conversions.

Two things specific to this market deserve a decision rather than a default. The first is buy now, pay later. Tabby and Tamara are widely used across the UAE and Saudi Arabia, and for higher basket values they measurably change whether a customer completes a purchase. The second is cash on delivery, which is still expected in parts of the market and needs a workflow for reconciliation and failed deliveries, not just a checkbox.

We cover the gateway landscape in depth in our guide to payment gateways in the UAE, and we handle the integration work as part of payment gateway integration.

VAT on a UAE Shopify store

The UAE applies VAT at five percent, and if your taxable supplies cross the mandatory registration threshold you must register. On Shopify this is not difficult, but it is easy to get subtly wrong in ways that surface later during an audit.

The practical checklist: set your prices as tax inclusive if that is how you display them to consumers, configure the UAE tax region rather than relying on a global default, ensure your invoices carry your TRN, and confirm that exports outside the GCC are handled correctly rather than being charged local VAT by accident. If you sell into Saudi Arabia at any volume, treat that as a separate tax question, because it is.

Arabic, and what bilingual actually requires

A serious UAE storefront is bilingual, and bilingual means more than running the theme through a translation app. Arabic is right to left, which affects layout, navigation, iconography and the direction your entire interface reads. A theme that has not been built with right to left in mind will produce a storefront that technically displays Arabic and still feels broken to an Arabic speaking customer.

Get three things right. Use a theme with genuine right to left support. Translate product content properly rather than machine translating it, because product copy is sales copy. And make sure the language switcher is obvious, persistent and does not throw the customer back to the homepage every time they use it.

Shipping across the Emirates and the wider GCC

Shipping is where margins quietly disappear. Courier pricing across the UAE is not uniform, and rates to the northern emirates or to remote areas differ from intra Dubai delivery. Flat rate shipping is simple to set up and it is the reason a lot of stores lose money per order without noticing.

Configure zones that reflect real courier pricing, decide deliberately whether free shipping above a threshold is a margin decision or a marketing one, and if you ship into Saudi Arabia or the wider GCC, account for customs documentation up front rather than discovering it at the border.

Shopify versus WooCommerce versus a custom build

Shopify is the right answer for most UAE retail businesses. It is hosted, it is secure by default, it handles PCI scope, and it lets a small team run a serious store without an engineer on standby. You trade some control for that, and you pay platform fees.

WooCommerce makes sense when you already run WordPress, you need unusual flexibility, and you have someone responsible for maintenance and security. A custom build makes sense when your commercial model is genuinely not a catalogue and a checkout, for example marketplaces, complex B2B pricing, or deep integration with an ERP.

If you are weighing this decision, our web development team scopes it against your actual operation rather than a preference.

What a UAE Shopify store should cost

A themed store with your branding, products loaded, payments and shipping configured is the entry point. A properly designed store with custom sections, a bilingual storefront, real product photography direction and analytics wired correctly sits meaningfully above that. A store with custom app work, ERP integration or a subscription model sits above that again.

The honest guidance is that the platform is rarely the expensive part. The expensive parts are the content, the photography, the integrations and the ongoing growth work. A beautiful store with no traffic is a cost, not an asset.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Shopify Payments in the UAE?

Availability varies, and most UAE merchants connect a regional gateway such as Telr, PayTabs, Network International or Checkout.com instead. The practical question is which one settles to your bank in AED on a cycle you can live with.

Do I need an Arabic version of my store?

If you sell to consumers in the UAE or Saudi Arabia, yes. It affects both conversion and credibility, and it needs genuine right to left support rather than a translation layer bolted on.

Can I offer cash on delivery on Shopify?

Yes, and in this market you often should. The work is not enabling it, it is building the reconciliation and failed delivery workflow around it so it does not create an accounting problem.

How long does it take to launch a Shopify store?

A focused build with content ready is a matter of weeks. What extends timelines is almost always content: product photography, descriptions and translations. Start those before the build, not after.

Getting it right the first time

AVMDEVS has been building commerce systems since 2011, with desks in Dubai, Jeddah, Beirut and the United States. We have shipped storefronts across homeware, beauty, smart home and sports retail, and the pattern is consistent: the stores that perform are the ones where payments, tax, language and shipping were treated as design decisions rather than settings.

If you are planning a store or fixing one that is not converting, tell us what you are trying to sell and you will get a straight answer about what it takes.

Let's build what's next.

Tell us what you are trying to ship. You will talk to the people who will actually build it, not a sales layer.
