Searching for SEO services near me returns hundreds of companies making nearly identical claims. Most of them will take your money. A smaller number will move your rankings. The difference is not visible on their websites, so you have to find it in the conversation.
We do this work, so we know exactly which questions are uncomfortable to answer badly.
Does local actually matter for SEO?
Less than you would think for the work itself, more than you would think for the relationship. SEO is executed remotely regardless of who you hire. What proximity buys you is a shared timezone, accountability, and someone who can sit in a room when it matters.
Local knowledge matters most when your business is local: when you compete in map results, when your customers search with city and neighbourhood terms, and when reviews and local citations drive your visibility. A national ecommerce brand needs a different skill set from a clinic competing in one metro area.
The seven questions that reveal competence
What will you actually do in month one? A real answer is specific: a technical audit, fixing crawl and indexation issues, restructuring key pages. A vague answer about optimisation and content is a reseller.
Who does the work? Ask whether it is in house or subcontracted. Subcontracting is not automatically bad, but you should know, because it determines how quickly problems get fixed.
Can you show me a client whose traffic you grew, with the analytics? Not a testimonial. A chart, a timeframe, and an explanation of what caused the change.
What is your link building approach? If the answer involves buying links or private blog networks, walk away. That is a risk they are taking with your domain, not theirs.
How do you report? Reporting should tie to business outcomes, not ranking screenshots for terms nobody searches.
Can you fix things on my site, or only recommend them? This one matters enormously. An agency that produces recommendations your developer never implements has produced nothing.
What does leaving look like? Contract length, notice period, and what you keep. You should keep everything: content, accounts, data.
Red flags worth walking away from
Guaranteed number one rankings. Nobody controls the algorithm. A guarantee is either meaningless or describes a term with no search volume.
Secret methods. Legitimate SEO is not proprietary. If they will not explain it, it is because explaining it would lose the sale.
Reporting only on rankings. Rankings are an input. Traffic, enquiries and revenue are outcomes. A report that never mentions outcomes is avoiding the subject.
Long lock ins with no exit. SEO takes months, so some commitment is reasonable. Twelve months with no performance review is not.
What good looks like, month by month
Month one is diagnosis and technical repair: crawl issues, indexation, speed, structure, and the fixes that need no permission. Months two and three are content and on page work against real target terms. Months four to six are where compounding starts to show in traffic. Beyond that, authority building and content depth do the heavy lifting.
If you are being told to expect transformation in week three, you are being sold something other than SEO.
What local SEO specifically involves
If your customers search for a service alongside a place, much of your visibility is decided by things that are not on your website at all.
Your business profile. Complete categories, accurate hours, real photographs, correct service area. This is the highest leverage asset in local search and it costs nothing.
Consistency of your details. Your name, address and phone number should be identical everywhere they appear online. Inconsistency quietly undermines local ranking, and it accumulates as businesses move or rebrand.
Reviews. Volume, recency, rating, and whether you respond. Reviews influence both ranking and whether someone chooses you once they have seen you.
Location relevant content. Pages that genuinely serve a location, not one page duplicated with the city name swapped, which search engines have handled poorly for you for years.
Reading an SEO report without being misled
Reports are where weak agencies hide. Three habits protect you.
First, insist that ranking claims are tied to search volume. Position one for a term nobody searches is not an achievement, and it is the most common way a flat month is presented as progress.
Second, look at organic traffic and enquiries as the headline, with rankings as supporting detail. If that order is reversed, ask why.
Third, ask what changed and what it caused. A report that lists activity without linking it to outcomes is a timesheet.
When SEO is the wrong thing to buy first
Sometimes the honest answer is that you do not need SEO yet. If your site is slow, broken on mobile, or converts almost nobody, sending more traffic to it multiplies a problem rather than solving one.
Equally, if you need customers this quarter, paid search answers faster. SEO compounds and it is worth starting early, but it does not rescue an immediate revenue gap. An agency willing to tell you that before taking a retainer is showing you something useful about how they work.
Frequently asked questions
How much do SEO services cost?
Pricing varies widely by market and scope. The more useful question is what is included: audit, technical fixes, content production, digital PR and reporting are separable, and cheap retainers usually cover only one of them.
How long before SEO works?
Meaningful movement typically takes three to six months, longer in competitive markets or on a domain with little authority. Technical fixes can show faster.
Can I do SEO myself?
Partly. Publishing genuinely useful content and keeping your site fast and well structured takes you a long way. Technical work and authority building are where most businesses need help.
Is local SEO different from regular SEO?
Yes. Local SEO adds map visibility, business profile optimisation, local citations and reviews. If customers find you by searching a service plus a place, that is the discipline you need.
How we work
AVMDEVS is a US registered company with engineering teams across four territories, and our SEO work is done by people who can also fix the site. That matters more than it sounds: most SEO recommendations die because nobody implements them.
